Juniper Springs

It's a mild-temperature but storm-threatening day in mid-January, and I've just said goodbye to one of my best friends, whom I probably won't see again for months...

Gentle viewer, we are now on the edge of Juniper Prairie Wilderness, located deep in the heart of Ocala National Forest about half an hour east of Silver Springs.

The area shown, the main spring, is surrounded by a picnic area and campground. The man-made stuff visible in the photo was originally built by the CCC in the '30s.

From here, a stream begins. Years back, I went on it several times on canoe outings with UF groups. The put-in spot for canoes is a little ways past the mill. The stream through the wilderness is as beautiful as any place I've seen in Florida.
