Apostle Jug
Grotesque on the handle of a stoneware gothic-style 'apostle' jug'. These jugs were manufactured in large quantities in the 19th century. This design, which was first produced in 1842 was one of the most popular. It is relief moulded; a mass-production technique which used elaborate plaster moulds, with no extra work required for adding the decoration, making them both attractive and affordable. The body of the jug has a series of figures (the 'apostles') in architectural niches.
