Crossing the Tekes river in 1907)

Travellers crossing the Tekes river (a tributary of the Ile river in Xinjiang, China) in 1907. My restoration and digital hand colorization of then colonel (later Marshal of Finland and President of Finland) Carl Gustaf Mannerheim´s (1867-1951) photo in the Finnish Heritage Agency archive. (At the time, when Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy of Imperial Russia, many Finns served as high ranking officers in the Imperial army.)

"In 1906 C.G. Mannerheim, then a cavalry colonel, set out on a horseback journey commissioned by the Russian general staff. It was to take him across Asia, from Samarkand to Peking, where he arrived two years later. Mannerheim's assignments on the way ranged from military reconnaissance and surveying work to inquiring into current conditions and public sentiments in Chinese Turkestan and the province of Gansu. His activities also extended to archeological and ethnographic research. On his 14,000-kilometre trek he secured several collections of value to Asian studies, as well as more than a thousand photographs.."
