Ivry-la-Bataille: Église Saint-Martin

L'Église Saint-Martin in the town of Ivry-la-Bataille (in the département of Eure, in the Normandie / Normandy region of northwestern France), on an overcast midday in early October 2016.

This church, viewed here from the south, dates from the end of 15th and beginning of the 16th century; it has been partly attributed to the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme (Delorme) (1515?-1570). It was damaged by lightning in 1664, then by a severe storm in 1688. Additional building took place during the 18th century, with some consolidation and restoration in the 19th century.

Ivry-la-Bataille lies on the Eure in a substantially agricultural area of inland Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy). Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566), mistress of and adviser to Henri II and governor of Normandy as her husband's widow, was an important patron of the church and town. It gained the suffix "la Bataille" after a nearby battle won by Henri IV in 1590, during the Wars of Religion. (When we stopped there, it was very peaceful --)
