Galway: tea shop sign

Sign over Cupán Tae, a tea shop on the edge of the old town of the city of Galway (in County Galway, western Ireland), on a midday of mixed rain and sun in mid-September.

The city's Irish name is Gaillimh, or Cathair na Gaillimhe (City of Galway). The old town is sometimes referred to as the "Latin Quarter."

The sign's upper lettering is in Gaelic type, also called Irish type; it was derived from the early medieval manuscript lettering style known as Insular script (which in turn is related to uncial script). The term "insular," from the Latin for "island," refers to the style's origin in Ireland and spread from there to Britain.
