The late world renowned artist LeRoy Neiman painted this fine artwork from the weigh-in for the second fight between Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali that was fought at The Forum, Inglewood, California on September 10, 1973. This original watercolor states at the bottom “Weigh-in Ali-Norton, Marriott Hotel L.A., Sunday Sept 9 ’73,”. Neiman has also penciled in Norton’s name and those of boxing matchmaker and promoter Bob Goodman and Harold Conrad for whom Neiman painting the scene and gifted it. A letter of provenance from Harold Conrad’s son accompanies this fine artwork. Harold Conrad was a sports and entertainment writer with The Brooklyn Eagle and The New York Mirror and wrote the radio and television series “Joe Palooka” before becoming a major boxing promoter. In the 1956 movie “The Harder They Fall,” according to its’ writer, the role of the spent sports writer played by Humphrey Bogart helping a dodgy promoter sensationalize a mediocre boxer to stardom; was based on Conrad. Conrad was also the promoter to Evel Knievel’s 1974 jump attempt over the Snake River Canyon, Idaho. As a fight promoter, Conrad was instrumental in getting Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay at the time) a title bout with Sonny Liston and founding the Boxing Writers Association. Conrad counted this artwork among his most prized pieces of memorabilia from his career and rightfully so since original Neiman artworks are very rare and valuable. Having as its’ subject a fight from the most renowned fight trilogy between heavyweights Ali-Norton makes this painting even more outstanding by comparison. After breaking Ali’s jaw and winning the first fight, Norton would succumb to Ali in a split decision in a hard fought epic battle that went the distance (12 rounds).
