In Green Township, Ohio, a high school art class has found a unique way to fuse an art history lesson with an art class. Each year, a teacher has the students paint their car- no, not paint an image of the car, but actually put paint on the vehicle- in a style of a famous artist. 2011’s artist was Claude Monet, and the students all painted a car in the style which Monet made famous. The teacher whose car is used gets to select the artist of their choice for the inspiration. The group of young artists learns about the artist and then imitates their style.
In 2012, the artist of choice was the famous pop America artist Peter Max. Max’s art has evolved over time, and as a true pop artist he has remained connected with what the public want and has been able to keep his art current and relevant. In the 1960s, he was known for his counter cultural psychedelic art and is credited for single handedly created the poster craze. After that point, Peter Max art has focused on mixed media elements, patriotic and humanitarian themes. For this project, the class needed to narrow down the scope, so they emphasized Peter Max’s 1960s style first credited for turning him into a famous artist. The students say that the final product was inspired by the famous Beatles Album Yellow Submarine, which interestingly enough was not created by Peter Max. The art was created by another artist inspired by Peter Max’s 1960s style. In addition to Peter Max art influences, the painted car also paid homage to the Cleveland area with local images included the skyline integrated into the finished product.
What’s on the docket for next year? Well, the teacher whose car is being used selected the famous Vincent Van Gogh. It should produce some interesting and exciting results!
