Montauban Pals Memorial
"To the glorious memory of the Liverpool and Manchester Pals who as part of the 30th Division liberated this village 1st July 1916".
This monument stands in the centre of the Montauban in the Somme region of France. On 1 July 1916, the first day of what we now know as the Battle of the Somme, the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th battalions of the Kings (Liverpool Regiment) and the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th battalions of the Manchester Regiment had fought their way through to the village.
Montauban remained free until it was recaptured by the Germans as part of their Spring Offensive at the end of March 1918. It was liberated again in August of that year.
