Las Vegas Gardening - Buried Half-barrel Planters

These plastic barrels were once plastic fruit juice barrels used to supply fruit juice to the casino buffets in Las Vegas. They were purchased at "A Silver Dollar Recycling" on Losee Rd near Cheyenne in Las Vegas. - phone: 491-6825

Cut in half, with holes drilled in the bottom with a door knob hole saw, they made nice planters when buried about 2-feet deep. I buried them because they aren't very pretty and also to keep the soil cooler. I originally installed them to contain and test special soil blends.

I replaced the barrels in 2009 with raised beds - the edges were getting chipped and damaged.

Here they are being set up for automatic drip irrigation.

The Styrofoam test beds on the right are also gone now - replaced in 2008 by one large raised bed like the one in the upper left of this picture.
