Saint Basil's Cathedral (Собор Василия Блаженного)
Erected on Red Square in Moscow in 1555–61, with eight side churches arranged around the central church of Intercession. The tenth church was added in 1588. The buildings are shaped as flames of a bonfire rising into the sky, a design that has foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century. The churches acquired their present-day vivid colours in several stages from the 1680s to 1848. For a time in the Soviet Union, there was talk of demolishing the churches mainly because they hindered Stalin's plans for massed parades in Red Square. They were saved thanks to the courage of the architect Pyotr Baranovsky........Wikipedia
