In France this kind of mural is known as tromp l’oleil which means an optical illusion.
French artist Hugues Sineux recreated a street scene in Hornsby early in the 20th Century. Ginger Meggs is a famous Aussie comic character that was based on a local red head kid called Charles Somerville who grew up to be mayor of Hornsby Shire.
