Luscious Garden. Eutrochium purpureum, Joe-Pye Weed, and Torch Lily, Kniphovia uvaria, Jochumhof, Steyl, The Netherlands

Here's a general view of the delightful Jochumhof at Steyl, a monastic village on the east bank of the Meuse River in Limburg (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/52423145190/in/photoli...). In the foreground Torch Lilies, Kniphovia uvaria, a striking plant from southern Africa. It was named for the German botanist Johann Hieronymus Kniphof (1704-1763). In the background-left high Eutrochium purpureum, Joe-Pye Weed. Who is Joe Pye, might well be the question. In fact,

it has been determined that the plant was named for a Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat (1722-?1809). The archival work by Richard B. Pearce and James S. Pringle unearthing this is highly interesting and worth a read: quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/p/pod/dod-idx/joe-pye-joe-pyes-law....
