Cold, Peaty Swamps. Andromeda polifolia, Bog Rosemary, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
In the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 1732 young Linnaeus trraveled in Lapland on the coasts of the Gulf of Bothnia on foot or by horse. He was interested in the culture and customs of the various peoples but especially, of course, in plants. An extensive account and enumeration of the plants he collected is his Flora Lapponica (1737).
Linnaeus gives various 'heather-like' plants the generic name 'Andromeda'. He found them in boggy areas between rocks and boulders. Andromeda is for the classical beauty Andromeda, chained naked to a rock on the coast of Ethiopia until she's rescued by Perseus. Hence Linnaeus' name.
In the new section for carnivorous plants in the Hortus is this Andromeda polifolia, which, says Linnaeus, grows in the colder bogs of Europe. The English 'Rosemary' is for the rosemary-like foliage. In The Netherlands it's rare in the wild and on the so-called Red List of endangered plants.
