Alluring Lines. Gladiolus imbricatus, Tiled Gladiolus, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This pretty Gladiolus hails from Central and Eastern Europe. In 1753 great Linnaeus described it as a new species: 'habitat in Russia citeriore'. By that 'citeriore' he meant to designate Russia west of the Ural Mountains; of course, it grows elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe, e.g. in Greece, too. There's been some discussion on whether this plant should actually by ranged under 'Gladiolus' but it's been resolved that it should.
Look at those intricate, alluring flower lines meant to guide insects to their nutrients.
