Fall Sugars. Trees Turning in the Gaasperplaspark, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
A delightful Autumn day. And a pleasant walk in the Gaasperplaspark. Brilliant Autumn colors. And they reminded me to make a dental appointment:
Leaves of deciduous trees turn color in the Fall. The reason is that in the diminishing daylight photosynthesis is scaled back and green chlorophyll absconds leaving 'the field' to yellow caroteens and reddish anthocyanins. Moreover, due to the shortened day, cells at the base of a leaf do divide but they no longer elongate. That has two main effects: the sugars produced in the leaf by photosynthesis are stopped from migrating through the leaf stem into the tree itself. They remain in the leaf causing those colors. And the weakened petiole cells decrease the staying power of our leaf; which with a gust of wind then easily falls to the ground.
