Drawing Insects. Cup-plant and Bumblebees, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Not many flowering plants now in this dreary Autumn. But our Cup-plant draws in what insects are around, in this case wonderful Bumblebees seeking sweet nutrients. Almost as if the Flowers are cups overflowing. But that's not how Silphium perfoliatum came by its common English name. The leaves cluster around the stem in a way that forms a kind of cup in which rainwater might collect.
