Killing for Nectar. Philanthus triangulum, Beekiller Wasp, on Thistle, Stepkensbeek, Meuse Corridor, Venlo, The Netherlands

Here's a wonderfully colorful Beekiller Wasp, a female I think. Both males and females forage for nectar, but in addition the female hunts down Honeybees to supply food for her eggs and larvae. They're beautiful creatures. I don't know whether they sting human beings but this Frog has often examined them closely even with a magnifying glass and never been 'attacked'.

I saw this little scene just to the north of the Stepkensbeek, a little rivulet, more of a ditch actually, that connects the so-called Blackwater in the eastern forest below Venlo to the Meuse River. I never knew its name but noticed it on the Google Map for the first time yesterday. Yours Truly likes to swim in the River at its mouth often more or less together with the Galloways.
