Orange Tricorne. Dyck's Bromeliad from Goiás, Dyckia goiana, and Ants, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
On April 20, 1966 Howard Samuel Irwin (1928-) and his team, during an expedition to the Highlands of Brazil, found this Wonderful Orange Bromeliad. Precise records were kept, and we know it was discovered 42 kms northeast of Campo Formoso, in the Serra dos Morcegos, Goiás, at 800 m. altitude. It was duly named and fully described in 1967 by Lyman Bradford Smith (1904-1997) as Dyckia goiana.
The genus of Bromeliads, Dyckia, was named for the great German-French botanist Joseph Maria Franz Anton Hubert Ignaz de Salm-Reiffesscheidt-Dyck (1773-1861). All Smith had to do was add the 'goiana' to that name.
I was lucky to have been able to admire Dyck's Bromeliad from Goiás in a Green House of the Hortus Botanicus here in Amsterdam where I'd fled the drab, windy and dark morning. I suppose the busy Ants - presumably a tropical kind - could care less about the weather... I'm not an Ant, though, and would have loved sitting on a Sunny Rock or Lilypad looking out for insects.
