The Ant and the Bee. Dwarf Honeybee, Apis andreniformis, and a Leafcutter Ant on Saraca thaipingensis, Yellow Ashoka, KLCC Park, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

"You big Dwarf Honeybee, you! styling yourself pompously as Apis andreniformis! No alarm at all in your Beebody!? Just foraging away, you! Didn't you read the papers yesterday and this morning?!"

"Ach! you Wee One! they don't even know your name except you're some kind of Leafcutter maybe! Why are you here on this Saraca anyway? and why bother me with your prattle?!"

"Well my dear Great Apis! You may have survived all those terrible insecticides.... I suppose your Queen hasn't told you yet. But the 'New Straits Times' yesterday morning showed a photo of the devastation wreaked upon a hill near Ipoh. Natural jungle illegally cleared for the Palm Oil Industry. There goes some more of our habitat. And today someone High Up in the Industry claiming no jungle was being cleared at all and that we should understand the 'nature and complexity of the problem'. And then stating that the Industry is 'environmentally friendly'."

"Really!? that does sound scary, Wee Leafcutter! But we - you and I - can clearly find our livelihoods in quite unnatural environments like this KLCC Park. And even on plants such as this Orange Saraca not native to our lands. So don't be alarmist!"
