Yellow Sustenance. Wild Bee, Andrena sp., on Dasiphora fruticosa, Shrubby Cinquefoil, Botanisk hage, University of Oslo, Tøyen, Oslo, Norway

In Oslo we took the efficient and very clean metro to the University at Tøyen to walk in the Botanical Garden, Botanisk hage. Established in 1814 it is the oldest of such gardens in Norway - if you don't count the herbal patches of medieval monasteries. It's delighfully set in rolling hills and well-maintained. A joy to be here in the bright sunshine!

This is Hairy Flower - that's what the original Greek of its name means - or more appropriately today: Shrubby Cinquefoil. I'm not sure it has many 'uses' but it sure is a golden beauty. The scientific name was given in 1898 by the Swedish-born American botanist Per Axel Rydberg (1860-1931), who was to become the curator (1908) of the famous Herbarium of the New York Botanical Garden.

Here Dasiphora is being visited by an industrious small bee; I think it's an Andrena of some sort... Regard the firmly packed pollen on her legs!
