The Prinsenhof in the centre of Groningen is on the edge of St Martin's Churchyard. Among other uses, it was long one of the the official residences of the Stadtholders of Groningen and Friesland until 1795 when that function came to an end with the advent of the 'French Period' in Dutch history. The most recent function of the Prinsenhof is that of a fancy hotel and its restaurant which caters to the well-heeled public.
The delightful Prinsentuin - once the Stadtholders' garden - is a well-tended public park owned by the town government. There are two nice patches of Rose Turtleheads, Chelone obliqua, which serve as free alimentation for a variety of insects.
