Vera & Ramona from Cape Ann, New England

Two fishing schooners moored on a sunny day at a jetty, in Cape Ann, now part of Gloucester Machachusetts, in 1905.

The dories of the Vera cling to her as shy toddlers to their nanny. Three of them are 'nested' in the way they were also stored on deck.

In 1883 the fisherman Howard Blackburn got lost in a gale in his dory off Newfoundland and rows with frozen hands for days to his safety, to become a legend. Later he would cross the Atlantic in a solo journey.

Vera was built in 1899, Ramona in 1892.

The first fishing schooner was built in 1713 in Cape Ann after an exempel from nearby Gloucester. The last schooner stopped in 1953 marking the end of the era of fishing under sail.
