Portel is a Portuguese town in the District of Évora, Alentejo and Central sub-region of Alentejo, with about 2 800 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with 601.15 kilometers ² and 8 109 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 8 districts. It is bordered to the north by the Municipality of Évora, east of Évora, southeast by Moura, Vidigueira the south, southwest of Cuba and west of Viana do Alentejo.
The town of Portel was founded in 1261 and received charter county in 1262.
History
St. Mary or Our Lady of the Lake
It was the year 1257, Lisbon on 28 June, when the King Alfonso III ordered the Municipality of Évora to hand over to D. John Peres Aboim, Rich Man, his vassal and Butler-Mor, the lands that now constitute the end of Portel. On 18 October 1261 was authorized by the king to build a castle and fortress, thus laying the foundations of the current town of Portel. On 1 December 1262, D. John and his wife Aboim D. Afonso Navy grant to residents of the new town of Portel letter of charter with the forums and customs of the city of Evora.
Deceased D. John Aboim fit the town of Portel, an inheritance to his son D. Pedro Eanes that came to deliver his sister Maria Eanes. This and her husband exchanged it for other lands, with the King Dinis. This landlord owned the town of Portel and castle until April 1331. Subsequently became the landlord, respectively, to: Queen Santa Isabel, King Afonso IV, D. Pedro I, and King Friends who donated to Gonçalo Rodrigues de Sousa became this man and mayor of Portel.
During the crisis politico-economic and social discovered in Portugal in the years 1383-1385 and after the s struggles that were fought for the occupation of the throne by King John I, was the town of Portel donated to the disputed D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. It is through his grandson, D. Fernando, 2nd Duke of Braganza, the town of Portel became part of the landlord of the house of Braganza, where he remained until the advent of Liberalism.
In 1510, King D. Manuel reformed the forums and customs of the Charter of charter of 1262 granting the Provincial Portel New Reading.
After the Liberal Revolution of 1820, Portel was integrated in the general administration of the state.

É sede de um município com 601,15 km² de área e 8 109 habitantes (2001), subdividido em 8 freguesias. O município é limitado a norte pelo município de Évora, a leste por Reguengos de Monsaraz, a sueste por Moura, a sul pela Vidigueira, a sudoeste por Cuba e a oeste por Viana do Alentejo.
A vila de Portel foi fundada em 1261, tendo recebido foral de concelho em 1262.

Santa Maria ou Nossa Senhora da Lagoa
Decorria o ano de 1257, Lisboa a 28 de Junho, quando o Rei D. Afonso III, ordenou ao Concelho de Évora que entregasse a D. João Peres de Aboim, Rico Homem, seu Vassalo e Mordomo-Mor, as terras que passaram a constituir o termo de Portel. Em 18 de Outubro de 1261 foi autorizada pelo soberano a construção de castelo e fortaleza, lançando assim os fundamentos da actual povoação de Portel. A 1 de Dezembro de 1262, D. João de Aboim e sua mulher D. Marinha Afonso concederam aos moradores da nova vila de Portel Carta de Foral com os foros e costumes da cidade de Évora.
Falecido D. João de Aboim coube a vila de Portel, em herança, a seu filho D. Pedro Eanes que a veio a entregar a sua irmã D. Maria Eanes. Esta e seu marido trocaram-na, por outras terras, com o rei D. Dinis. Este possuiu o senhorio da vila de Portel e castelo até Abril de 1331. Passou, posteriormente o senhorio, respectivamente, para: a rainha Santa Isabel, Rei D. Afonso IV, D. Pedro I, e Rei D. Fernando que o doou a Gonçalo Rodrigues de Sousa tornando-se este senhor e alcaide de Portel.
Durante a crise politico-económica e social que surgiu em Portugal nos anos 1383-1385 e posteriormente à s lutas que se travaram pela ocupação do trono por D. João I, foi a vila de Portel doada ao Contestável D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. É, por intermédio de seu neto, D. Fernando, 2º Duque de Bragança, que a vila de Portel passou a fazer parte do senhorio da Casa de Bragança onde se manteve até ao advento do Liberalismo.
Em 1510, El-Rei D. Manuel reformou os foros e costumes da Carta de Foral de 1262 concedendo a Portel Foral de Leitura Nova.
Depois da Revolução Liberal de 1820, Portel foi integrado na administração geral do Estado.

À Freguesia de Portel foi anexada a antiga Freguesia de S. João Baptista de Odivelas cuja igreja paroquial de orago a S. João Baptista e situada no Monte de S. João se encontra, na actualidade, em completa ruína.
