Macedo de Cavaleiros is a Portuguese city, in the district of Bragança, North and sub-region of Alto Trás-os-Montes, with about 6 000 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality with 699.27 kilometers ² and 17 210 inhabitants (2004), subdivided into 38 parishes. It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Bragança, Bragança to the northeast, east by Vimioso south of Bragança and Alfândega da Fé, on the southwest by Vila Flor and west by Mirandela.
History
According to the Inquiries of D. Afonso III, in 1258, the territory belonged to D. Macedo Nuno Martins and D. Mendes Gonçalves, noble knights. That territory was at the time, only a small village of less importance to their neighboring Nozelos, Vale Meadows, Tenements, and Sezulfe Pinhovelo which, were chartered before Bragança.
It was from the fourteenth century that Macedo first appears in documents as the Knights Macedo. It is likely that the fact that its grantees are riders have estaja the source of this additive.
In 1722, D. John V has reguengueiros letter of the House of Braganza to the residents of the fifth de Macedo. By designating M as "Thursday" it demonstrates the small size of this population.
On July 18, 1835, decreed that the new administrative division. The country was divided into districts, in these counties and in these parishes.
No Map No. 2 attached to the decree, mentioned, among the 44 counties that were to constitute the district of Bragança, in the Chacim, Tenements, Nozelos, Sezulfe and valley grasslands.
On November 6, 1836, reduced to two - and Chacim Slum - the old Municipalities that would constitute the core of Municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros.
A new administrative division was adopted in 1853 and establishing M as the Knights tried and County by removing the old counties of Chacim and Tenements.
