Praia da Vitória Village
Victoria Beach ( Praia da Vitória) is a city and county located in the eastern part of Terceira Island in the central group of the Azores.
In the Azores, the city has about 6 200 inhabitants. It is the seat of a municipality with 162.29 kilometers ² and 20 252 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 11 parishes. The council, one of two of the island is limited to the south and west by the municipality of Angra do and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east
Installed definitely the first settlers on the island of Terceira, Jacome Bruges became the first captain of the donee of the island, the place from the beach, where its residence, along with his lieutenant Diogo Teive. The beach was formed as the seat of the captaincy of the Third between 1456 and 1474, when the island was divided into two provinces, the disappearance of the grantee, leaving the captaincy of the Beach office of Álvaro Martins.
The region has developed rapidly, thanks to the culture of pastel and wheat. Thus, the beach was elevated to town, the county seat in 1480, yet the time of Alvaro Martins Homem.
In the last quarter of the sixteenth century, Gaspar Frutuoso thus describes the village:
"(...) And soon the town is the beach, sumptuous and noble and good buildings, built for a good way, surrounded by good wall with its bastions and strong all-round, filled with noble and old residents, as one of the oldest villages on the island, surrounded by fermosa farms and rich noble and grand nobles with a sumptuous and parish church of three naves, with a chapel with a dome and pillars and portals of carved stone and marble, all surrounded chapels of great (...) morgados its invocation main Santa Cruz (...)."
"(...) Where there house and Mercy hospital, two churches, a hospital of the Holy Spirit and one of Our Lady, with a ship in the middle (...); fermoso and a monastery of St. Francis in who continually lie ten or twelve religious, there are many chapels morgados similar to the aforesaid, three monasteries of nuns, the most important of which is Jesus (...), forty nuns in black veil and two, one Our Lady of Light and other Chagas, obedience and observance of St. Francis, where there are less religious. In the context of Philippine Dynasty, here was fought the battle of Sala (1581). Beach was the pretender to the throne of Portugal, D. Antonio Prior of Crato, was proclaimed king at the time of their arrival in this city in 1582. Later, in the context of the Portuguese Restoration of Independence, was the Beach that took the acclaim of John VI of Portugal, when the arrival of Francisco Ornelas of the Third House.
The village was devastated by the earthquake of 1614, with the sea swallowed it were the closest. During the seventeenth century was rebuilt, still prey to many smaller earthquakes.
During the Portuguese Civil War (1828-1834), yet here was fought the battle of Bay Beach (August 11, 1829), when a frustrated attempt to land a squad of troops Miguelistas. This victory meant that, by royal charter on 12 January 1837, in recognition, we were awarded the titles of "Outstanding Mui" and "Victory" by the sovereign.
Its economic importance has remained, despite the great earthquake of June 15, 1841 (the "Dump the Beach") that partially destroyed. The reconstruction, from the mid-nineteenth century was due to the initiative of the Director José Silvestre Ribeiro. Father Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade, who lived in the mid-nineteenth century, states:
"Only the traveler leaves the village of Cabo da Praia is soon to view the magnificent and majestic town of Praia da Vitoria, which is at a distance of just over a mile. (...)"
The village was elevated to city status on 20 June 1981 and was called Vila da Praia da Vitória to 1983.
In the second half of the twentieth century was built in place of Lajes a large aerodrome, the airport of Lajes. At this important work has joined more recently, the Ocean Port of Praia da Vitoria, with a jetty and 1400 meters long, also of great importance to the regional economy. Along the island's port is located in the main industrial center of the island.
