Rock-Tree Relationship

This relationship between a birch tree trying to grow on a steep hillside near Tinkers Falls and a rock was odd/interesting to me.

One can't be sure how the rock got where it is (human intervention?) but over the years the tree and some roots appear to have grown around the rock.
