Built to honor St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, it exemplifies Baroque theatrical design. The church is famous for its 17th-century trompe-l'œil ceiling fresco by Andrea Pozzo that creates the illusion of a dome. The ceiling is actually flat, but painted with perspective to look like a vast, domed structure.
