Day 15 - Statue of the Dwarf God Bes

Statue of Bes

This is a grey-veined marble statue of the Dwarf God Bes. He was usually depicted with a fearsome face and a tall feathered headdress. His ferocious appearance made him well-suited to ward off evil, and he was particularly associated with the protection of women in childbirth, and young children. He has variously been associated with drinking, dancing and marriage. His worship continued into the Roman Period, when he is sometimes shown in the dress of a soldier.

The provenance of this piece is unknown, and it has no accession number. It has been dated to the Ptolemaic-Roman Period (332BC-395AD)
