cryptic fuzzball

Young Virginia rail dashes though the marsh. Rails, labeled the "shadowbirds" by photographer William Burt, are among the most shy and furtive birds, far more often heard than seen. Virginia rails have loud penetrating calls and often sound like they're lurking nearby, but they stay hidden most of the time. Their infrequent appearances are erratic and brief.
