Temple complex
The Hanseswari temple stands on the West bank of river Hooghly, and is the largest temple in the vicinity. It was completed in 1814-15 after 15 years of work; Several Benaras masons were employed, and the roof is of the Benaras style. It has 13 cupolas, eight over the verandahs and their corners, then four higher cupolas in the middle, and lastly a central tower (the tallest) rising 60 to 70 feet high.
Just near the Basudev Temple, Hanseswari was built (1801-14) in the courtyard of the palace of the then King Nrishingha Dev at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 lacs. A five-storey construction with wood and stone, the masons of Jaipur (Rajasthan) built this tem¬ple with stones brought from Chunar. The temple is about 21 metre high with 13 spires which are all stone-lotuses with a thousand petals. It is a very rare architectural treat to the eyes of the visitors. The idol of Hanses-wari is four-armed, hued blue.
