Old Buildings with Character
This is a very small part of the huge mansion of Cliveden. The house was built in 1851 on the site of an earlier house. It was built for George Villiers, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. It was let to Frederick, Prince of Wales and in 1740 the first playing of the song "Rule Britannia" was performed in a rustic theatre in the garden. The house was twice destroyed by fire and twice rebuilt. They must have been quite careless with the candles in those days.
The present house was built in the classic Italian style which is fairly obvious in this lovely balcony area. In the early 1900's it became the home of Waldorf and Nancy Astor and became a very popular place for the famous and infamous. in 1961 it became famous as the meeting place of John Profumo and Christine Keeler which led to the Profumo Scandal which rocked the Conservative Government of the day. The house is now an exclusive hotel and the grounds belong to the National Trust.
