My New Job

I love my new job and I am aware how lucky I am to be able to say that.

This is SimMan, a simulator for medical training based at OxSim in Oxford. A great place to work and teaching and learning, although done with serious intent, is a lot of fun here.

In medical simulation we try to create as realistic a learning environment as possible with the aim of training healthcare professionals to be better, safer and more confident in what they do.

SimMan gives a good amount of feedback, including pulses, breath sounds and breathing rate, blood pressure, Oxygen levels and an ECG trace. You can stick needles in him and even turn him into a woman. Best of all we communicate as the patient through a microphone in the control room. We can be the nicest patient in the world or, if it is to the benefit of learning, we can make things as difficult as possible.

The candidates also get to experience both rare and complicated cases and normal training that can prepare them for what their daily work demands.

Best of all, at the end of the day, everyone learns something and no one gets hurt.
