Case in point on the overpacking: I brought my rock hammer, which I tend to keep in the car on trips in case a sudden need to do geology breaks out. I had no intention of doing geology on Cumberland Island, of course; this was a national park, and it's all loose barrier island sand, anyway. There isn't any surface rock here. But I realized the night before that I had forgotten to bring the spade you need for "leave no trace" primitive camp toiletry purposes. You're supposed to bury things, and the only thing I had handy that could bury things was my 2-pound rock hammer. So I brought it.
It turns out, though, that they'd recently built a nice little bathhouse facility at Stafford they hadn't advertised. Conditions weren't as primitive as I'd expected, so I could have left the hammer in the car.
