Lucille Sign Background

To simulate the open grain of the original door, the Birch plywood was sanded with 320 grit sandpaper. Then denatured alcohol was applied with a rag over the plywood surface to raise the grain. After the alcohol evaporated, multiple coats of an oil-based ebony color stain were applied. Each coat made the background a shade darker and each coat allowed to dry in the sun before the next application. The background required 7 coats to match the color of the original door. The final coat was followed up by a clear spray acrylic for weather resistance.
