This Place Matters - The Humble Oil Service Station
Winner of the National Trust For Historic Preservation's 2009 "This Place Matters" contest
This service station was designed by Houston architect, John Staub. Staub was famed for his residential designs for the wealthy and elite, including River Oaks clients Ima Hogg (Bayou Bend) and Hugh Roy Cullen. One of Staub's clients was Harry C. Wiess, cofounder of Humble Oil. Staub designed many Humble Oil service stations in a trademark style that included a projecting canopy and a hipped roof main structure. This station on South Laredo in San Antonio, is the most spectacular of the 4 remaining in San Antonio. I've also run across varients of the design in Livingston, Runge, Seguin, Pearsall, and Kenedy.
