The museum at the Kennesaw National Battlefield Park contains many items that both the Confederate and Union armies used. The soldiers did not carry many items with them because it was a burden but those in charge had to have some necessary items handy in order to make sure everything is going how it is planned. One of such items is the compass. The compass in the picture above belonged to Lieutenant James H. Connelly (information at the Museum). It is made of copper and is about two or three feet tall. The compass also has three legs on which it stands and these legs can be placed together for easy carrying while on the run or on the move. Even though the position of the Kennesaw Mountain was very useful for the armies to tell which way is north, the compass was very useful when the armies had to travel. The Union army came from the North and had to use this navigational tool in order to reach the Kennesaw Mountain and later Atlanta.
