The local bus, Southern Chile

Returning to Castro from the national park on the island of Chiloe, in southern Chile.

On the last day of a long, holiday weekend, everyone who'd gone to visit their families still living in the rural farm areas was trying to cram themselves into the last two buses of the day.

The bus was packed to the point where it was impossible to move or see out the windows (we were trapped standing half way down the bus), it was raining, the road was quite thick with mud in many places, and the driver was quite happy to swerve and skid through it. This was quite un-nerving for many of the people inside.

We finally stopped when the bus started sliding backwards down a slope. After three attempts and increasing amounts of complaining from distraught passengers to be let off, the driver finally let people out to help lighten the load. The guys doing some road works some distance away eventually arrived to tow the bus up the slope. Meanwhile, those of us who didn't mind getting a little wet walked alongside it.
