Senior members of the Mountain Rescue Service(MRS) watching the memorial service. On 5th May 2022, the RAF MRS held a Service of Dedication and Remembrance after the unveiling of a RAF MRS monument at the National Memorial Arboretum. Guests include Commander Medical RAF, Group Captain Priestley, A4 Force Elements Commander, Group Captain Huntley, and serving and ex-serving MRS troops. Since its formation the RAF MRS has sustained a high readiness capability for Search and Rescue (SAR) and Aircraft Post Crash Management operations. Born out of wartime necessity to save the lives of downed aircrew in the mountainous regions of the UK, the modern RAF MRS now has 3 Mountain Rescue Teams (MRT) located at RAF Leeming, RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Valley and is supported by a dedicated Support Flight and MRS HQ at RAF Valley. Officer Commanding MRS, Squadron Leader Ed Slater states, “The RAF Mountain Rescue Service has a proud tradition of helping others. Since 1943, when Flight Lieutenant George Graham ventured into the mountains to rescue downed airman, the men and women of the RAF MRS have continued this selfless pursuit. The monument being unveiled today pays tribute to the 12 Troops who have given their lives whilst on mountain rescue duties. The monument is also dedicated to the families who provide unwavering support to the Troops and enable them to undertake lifesaving duties, this is a place for the entire MRS family to reflect.” The RAF MRA, formed in 1993 following the MRS’ 50th anniversary, is the official organisation for past and present members of RAF MRS, and is managed by a small committee of dedicated volunteers. In addition to an MRA tree planted in the NMA, the MRS and MRA have erected a monument that marks the Troops’ and their family’s dedication, alongside the 26 principal locations of RAF MRTs. MRA Chairman, Brian Canfer comments, “It is with tremendous pride and humility that we have created this permanent monument to the outstanding and unstinting dedication and commitment shown by the estimated 8,000 Troops who have served in the RAF MRS since its formation in 1943 and the essential support that those same Troops received from their families and friends. We are acutely aware of the 12 Troops who lost their lives serving with the MRS and conscious too of those who received life-changing injuries in its service. Like almost every action within the MRS and the MRA, the creation of this monument has been the epitome of teamwork.” Throughout the MRS’ history and until present day, although SAR operations and traditions have evolved, these like-minded and committed volunteers have always been, and will continue to operate as Defence’s only all-weather, ground based SAR organisation. Through maintaining a one-hour readiness state, 24/7/365 the MRTs epitomise the MRS motto, ‘Whensoever’.
