In 1966 Here Come the Brides by Bernard Glemser was published. A pleasant beach read about the bridal department of a department store it had one memorable passage. When one of the brides kept insisting that her dress should be cut lower in the front the exasperated salesperson exclaimed: “Why don’t you just carry them down the aisle on a silver platter”
I read the book when it came out and that is the only thing I remember but every time I see this sort of cantilevered décolletage it pops into my mind.
