We’ll always have Paris…
Maurice Neumont
French, 1868-1930
Women for Everybody, 1896
Oil on paper
This small painting by poster designer
Maurice Neumont formed the book cover for the 1896 publication of Les Femmes à tout le monde (Women for Everybody), a collection oftwenty four
satirical scenes that illuminate the
often fraught relationships between
women and the different men in their
lives, be they husbands or illicit lovers.
Neuron’s picture introduces a seductively smiling. perhaps overly elegant
demimonde parading her finery in an
open carriage; a basket-carrying errand
girl ducking away from the unwanted attention of a top hatted gentleman;
and a modestly dressed working woman
walking serenely on the arm ofher beat.
