Henry Blogg

Memorial to Henry Blogg, the famous lifeboatman of Cromer. For his work as a member of the Cromer lifeboat crew for 53 years, during which he was coxswain from 1909 -1947, he was awarded 3 RNLI gold medals and 4 silver medals for 'conspicuous gallantry'. He and his crew saved 873 lives during a total of 387 launches.

Notable rescues for which he received a medal include that of the SS Fernebo in 1917, when 11 crewmen were saved. The lifeboat was still powered by oarsmen in those earlier days. In 1927 15 crewmen were saved from a Dutch tanker, SS Georgia, that had run into trouble on the notorious Hasbro Sands. In 1932, 29 men and a dog were saved from the Italian vessel Monte Nevoso and the Tyrolean sheepdog was gifted to Blogg and called Monte, after the ship.

Probably the most famous rescue was that of the bargemen from Sepoy, a Thames sailing barge carrying a cargo of tiles, it foundered off Cromer beach and the lifeboat rescued them, after a first failed attempt. Then, in a second attempt, Henry Blogg steered the lifeboat on to the deck of the barge and finally drove it back to the beach.

Another memorial to Henry Blogg is the bust by James Woodford, which sits on top of the cliff looking out to the scene of so many of his rescues. See www.flickr.com/photos/8118630@N08/27714267382/in/photostr...
