Arthur Saunders VC
Arthur Frederick Saunders VC ( 1879 - 1947) is honoured here in a new flagstone at the Soane St entrance to Christchurch Park, Ipswich to mark the centenary of his brave actions.
Arthur first joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15, reaching Petty Officer rank. He then went to work for local engineering firm, Ransome's of Ipswich, where he also joined the Territorial Division of the Suffolk Regiment. Once WWI broke out he joined up as a regular soldier and was a sergeant in the 9th battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.
At the Battle of Loos in September 1915, his officer was too wounded to carry on, so Arthur took charge ( although he too had been wounded) of two machine guns and gave support to another battalion until he too was stretchered off the field.
He then went on to join the Home Guard during WWII.
