Saving the Obbia
A plaque giving thanks for the saving of the steamship Obbia of Marseille when caught in a dreadful cyclone in the Indian Ocean in 1901. Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseille, a late 19th century Neo-Byzantine basilica. Standing as it does, guarding the promontory above the harbour at Marseille, there is an obvious connection with the sea and the long term maritime activity of this busy port and, throughout the church, suspended from the ceiling and inscribed on the walls, are numerous reminders of tragedy and salvation at sea.
