Here's where we went with respect to Beijing. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)
As you can see, Hohhot is quite a bit further away from Beijing than Datong, and the grasslands and the desert are even further still. It's a good thing we chose to fly to Hohhot instead of drive.
Ruby came to visit us from Hong Kong for the May Day holiday. She had complained that when Ching was with us, Ching got to go to all kinds of interesting places. Now that she would be joining us for a short visit, Ruby wanted us to take her somewhere interesting, too. So we headed to Inner Mongolia.
We flew from Beijing to Hohhot where we met a tour guide with a minivan. From there we travelled north west of Hohhot into the prairie grasslands that sit on a plateau that stands 1600 metres above sea level.
Once there, we spent a night in a yurt – a Mongolian tent.
The next day, we piled into the minivan and embarked on a 5 hour drive to the edge of the 库布其沙漠(Kùbùqí Shāmò - Kùbùqí Desert) which lies 45 kms south of Baotou.
