Hell on earth

Can you imagine moving through the jungle when these plants are slashing your flesh?

 

Apparently, even a machete is no match for this thorny palm plant.

 

I wonder how Lt. Col. F. Spenser Chapman navigated these jungles while fighting the Japanese, long before they became resorts.
