Co-op 574, Walsall, 1986

Old electric milk floats were still fairly commonplace in the late 1980s. 307KDH, a Smiths Electric float of circa 1960 was knocking on the door of 26-years old at the time of this photo.

The location was the Co-op Dairy on Midland Road at Caldmore in Walsall, West Midlands, who operated an eclectic fleet of elderly floats. From memory, Caldmore was always pronounced 'Car'ma' by the locals. Anyway, to my regret, I only every made one photographic journey to this particular depot to catch some of the fleet at work.

Today, a probationary office complex and a small housing estate stand on the site of the former Co-op dairy, which was on the junction of Midland Road and Tasker Street. Happily, part of the old dairy perimeter wall still stands, and the road into the estate is named Dairy Close.
