Lancaster CT 710, scrap yard shunter, Barnsley, c1972
Two former Lancaster City Transport Leyland (H33/26R) bodied, Leyland PD2s, cut-down and in use as yard-shunters in a Barnsley breakers yard in c1972.
710 (nearest) carried the registration NTC710, and had been delivered new to LCT in 1951 along with sisters 708 and 709 (NTC708/709). Although unidentified in this image, the second bus has to be either 708 or 709.
All three buses had been withdrawn from use by LCT in August 1971 and later sold for scrap. Seemingly these two enjoyed a brief reprieve in their new role.
I've long referred to buses and trucks used in this capacity in scrap yards as death camp workers, their breaking only delayed by a few weeks or months.
The Mitchell's advert on the sides of the buses was for the long established Mitchell's Brewery of Lancaster, whose history dated back to 1971. The company ceased brewing in 1999, becoming part of PubCo and later the Mitchell Hotel chain. The company finally went into administration in late 2018.
