Wokingham Road, Reading, 1968
Another image from an old Dixons Prinzcolour 35mm transparency in the collection. You are looking along Wokingham Road, Reading at its junction with Pitcroft Avenue in the early months of 1968. There’s little traffic on the road, as trolleybus 187 steadily makes its way towards its outer terminal point at the intersection of Holmes Road and Wokingham Road (Three Tuns public house), just another half mile up the road.
187 (VRD187) was a Burlingham bodied Sunbeam F4A trolleybus that had been new to Reading just six years earlier in July 1961. Unlike some other members of the batch, 187 never went on to see further service after withdrawal from traffic at the end of October 1968. Instead it was sold to P J Bennett, a scrap dealer on 2nd March 1969, before eventually being sold on to G T motors of Southall who broke her up along with other members of the batch.
The Reading trolleybus system finally closed on 3rd November 1963.
