Dapper Young Man
Carte de visite by Wires of Milford. This freckle-faced lad, his long, curly locks combed, strikes a dapper pose in a tailored suit and matching hat.
Vermont-born photographer Ephraim Lewis Wires (1834-1905) operated a gallery in Milford, Mass. His obituary in the May 17, 1905, issue of The Boston Globe notes: “He came to Milford about 1857 and had resided here ever since. He was a prominent photographer here 40 years ago and was one of the first in this state to apply practical principles of art to photography. Later he became interested in the ‘clinching screw,’ an important patent for shoe manufacture. He remained many years as partner in Estabrook, Wires & Co., and later acquired that business. He retired with a fortune 20 years ago and since was interested in various corporations as an investor.”
