This is What's Happening to Society
Despite the mass ability of active audiences to publish and distribute content across multiple media platforms accessed via an Ipad and the vast quantities of information and differing opinions available, it seems, quite ironically, society and social relationships are suffering fragmentation instead of unification through diversity; content diversity actually narrows the rate of exposure diversity, thus making society polarized (Errington and Miragliotta 2007). For example, Youtube makes video suggestions based on your viewing habits and advertisements online are tailored to suit each person. Howard Rheingold (2009) says; “it is about conjuring intelligent input – developing means for clearly and continuously detecting information that could be valuable for each individual.” We are slowly ruling out a huge portion of society that may not possibly directly impact us through digitised media’s ‘hyper-niching’ tendencies.
